Makes one batch — fits a 750 ml bottle
Summer in South Africa has a very specific way of humbling you on the bike. You head out at 6am feeling clever, and by 8:30 your bottle is warm enough to make tea in. Which, honestly, gave me an idea. 🫖
Our recipe page already has shakes and a homemade gel, but nothing simple for the bottle cage. So here it is: cold rooibos, a splash of orange juice, a spoon of honey and a pinch of salt. Made the night before, half-frozen, and about as South African as a ride drink gets.
It tastes like the iced tea your gran kept in the fridge, not like a chemistry experiment. And it costs a fraction of a tub of sports drink powder.
Why rooibos works in a ride bottle
- It’s caffeine-free. Great if you’re riding late afternoon, on the trainer after work, or you just don’t want a jittery stomach on a long day.
- It’s mild. Rooibos is low in tannins, so it doesn’t go bitter and harsh when it sits in the fridge overnight.
- Honey + orange juice = real carbs. A mix of sugars your body can actually use while you ride, without the neon color.
- The pinch of salt matters. You lose sodium when you sweat, and a little salt also makes the drink taste less sweet and more “drinkable” when you’re hot.
Ingredients
- 2 rooibos tea bags
- 500 ml just-boiled water
- 2 tablespoons honey
- ⅛ teaspoon fine salt (a generous pinch)
- 200 ml 100% orange juice (not nectar or “juice blend”)
- Optional: a few strips of orange zest or a thin orange slice
Equipment
You’ll also need: a jug, a freezer-safe plastic squeeze bottle, and a fridge that won’t judge you.
Method
- Brew it strong-ish. Steep the 2 rooibos bags in 500 ml of just-boiled water for 5 minutes. Rooibos is forgiving, so a bit longer won’t ruin it.
- Dissolve while warm. Remove the bags, then stir in the honey and salt while the tea is still warm. This is the step everyone skips, and then wonders why there’s a honey blob at the bottom of the bottle.
- Cool completely. Let it cool to room temperature, then add the 200 ml orange juice and the zest (if using). Stir well.
- Half-freeze the night before. Pour about half the mixture into your bottle and freeze it upright with the lid off or loose. Keep the rest in a closed jar in the fridge.
- Top up in the morning. Fill the bottle with the chilled remainder, shake, and go. The frozen half slowly melts as you ride, so it stays properly cold for much longer.
Quick tips
Quick tips: Freeze only half (liquid expands, and a fully frozen bottle can split). Don’t freeze insulated steel bottles; most aren’t designed for it. Keep refrigerated and use within 24 hours of mixing. Keep the bottle cold during your ride; the 24-hour limit does not mean it can stay unrefrigerated all day. Rinse your bottle well afterward, because juice and honey are sticky little gremlins.
The fuel numbers (honest version)
| Per batch | Approximate amount |
|---|---|
| Carbohydrates | ±56 g (honey ±34 g + orange juice ±22 g) |
| Sodium | ±280 mg |
| Caffeine | None |
When I use it: long, hot outdoor rides and sweaty Zwift endurance sessions over about an hour. I treat it as roughly one bottle per hour, alongside whatever I’m eating. For a short easy spin, plain water is honestly fine.
Salty sweater? If your kit dries with white salt lines, bump the salt up to ¼ teaspoon (±575 mg sodium). Try it in training first, never on race day. Every gut is different, and yours gets a vote.
Easy tweaks
- Less sweet: drop to 1 tablespoon honey and top up with extra cold rooibos. You’ll have ±39 g carbs per bottle.
- Lemon twist: swap half the orange juice for a squeeze of lemon and a little extra honey.
- Batch it: double the ingredients for two bottles, provided both will be used within 24 hours of mixing. Keep refrigerated until needed. Otherwise, make a fresh batch for each ride.
- Green rooibos: lighter and grassier, if the red version tastes too “tea-ish” for you mid-ride.

Final thoughts
This isn’t a magic potion, and it won’t make you faster on its own. It will give you a cold, cheap, genuinely tasty bottle you actually want to drink when it’s 32 degrees and the next coffee stop is still 20 km away. And drinking enough is half the battle on a hot day.
Make one tonight, freeze half, and tell me how it went. I want to know if your gran approves. 🍊
The best ride drink is the one you’ll actually finish. Mine just happens to taste like home.
