Tour of Watopia Stage 1: Which Route Should You Choose?

tour of watopia choose your route

Stage 1 of the Tour of Watopia looks innocent. Three routes. A pair of virtual socks. Double XP. What could possibly go wrong? 🩷

Then your brain quietly suggests that riding all three would be “efficient”, and suddenly you’re rearranging your whole week around a fictional island with dinosaurs on it.

So let’s keep it simple. Here’s the quick answer first, and the details after.

Tour of Watopia Stage 1 routes at a glance

Beach Island Loop (short)13.3 km44 mBusy days, easy spins and saving your legs for tomorrow
Sand and Sequoias (standard)22.4 km181 mA solid midweek ride that still fits around work and supper

Distances and climbing include the lead-in. Any one route completes Stage 1.

The Tour of Watopia Stage 1 basics

  • When: Stage 1 opened on 5 October and runs until Stage 2 opens on 12 October. Check the exact cut-off time in the Zwift Companion app, because it isn’t set in South African time.
  • What you need to do: finish one of the three routes. That’s it.
  • The reward: a pair of virtual Tour socks (according to Zwift Insider), plus double XP on the Tour routes. 🧦
  • Good news if you’re busy: Zwift Insider reports that you don’t have to join a scheduled event. Free riding the route, or even doing a workout on it, counts once the stage has opened.
  • Missed a stage? Zwift is running make-up stages towards the end of the Tour. Keep an eye on the Companion app for dates.

🩷 Beach Island Loop: for the busy days

13.3 km · 44 m of climbing

This is the flattest and shortest option. Choose it when your riding window is short, you’re easing into the Tour, or you want to keep something in the tank for tomorrow.

Nobody at the sock factory is checking your distance.

One thing to remember: a short route isn’t automatically an easy ride. If you want it to be a recovery spin, keep the effort gentle and let the faster riders go.

🌲 Sand and Sequoias: the middle-ground route

22.4 km · 181 m of climbing

This route takes you through the Fuego Flats desert and the rolling roads of the sequoia forest. Pick it when you have time for a longer session but still want to cook supper and be in bed at a respectable hour.

The women-only group rides (Group D) use this route, so it’s a lovely week to try a group event if you’ve been putting it off. 💕

Sand and Sequoias was also the race route listed for Stage 1, 5–12 October 2026.

🔥 Watts of the Wild: for a planned endurance session

42.2 km · 309 m of climbing

This is the one to choose when the ride is the main event of your training day, not something you’re squeezing in between a Teams call and the school run.

Before you clip in:

  • Fill your bottles (plural – you’ll sweat more than you expect)
  • Keep fuel within arm’s reach, not in the kitchen “for later”
  • Switch the fan on, and use the biggest one you’ve got
  • Put a towel over the bars, because indoor sweat is a whole different weather system
  • Choose an effort you can hold for the full distance

The first few kilometres of a long ride usually feel easy.

🚴‍♀️ New to Zwift and not sure where to start?

If the Tour has you riding more than usual and you’d like some structure to keep going afterward, the 8-Week Zwift Beginner Plan lays out every ride, week by week. It’s three short rides a week, with plain-English guidance on how hard each one should feel, so you don’t need to understand watts yet. It’s a printable PDF, ready to download straight away.

😈 “But what if I just did all three?”

For Stage 1 credit, you only need to finish one route. Riding all three only matters if you’re chasing the Ultimate Challenge, which Zwift Insider describes as completing all 15 cycling routes across the Tour, totaling about 405 km and 3,760 m of climbing.

If that excites you, spread the rides across the week and keep some of them easy. If it doesn’t, pick one route and enjoy your socks with a clear conscience. Double XP doesn’t cancel out tired legs. 😂

My riding plans for the week of 5 October 2026

As I wrote on 7 October 2026: I rode Watts of the Wild on Monday, so the long one is already done. On Wednesday evening I’m riding Sand and Sequoias at 6 pm, then heading out on the running route, That’s Amore, at 7 pm.

So yes, my plan for that week included more than one route. But I’ve spread them out, and each one is a comfortable fit for my training week rather than something I’m cramming in for the XP.

If you’re new to Zwift and want to see what else Watopia (and the rest of my Zwift life) looks like, have a browse through the blog.

The socks are the same no matter which route you ride. Choose the one that leaves you wanting to come back tomorrow.

So, which one are you choosing: short, standard, long… or are you making eyes at all three? Tell me in the comments. 🩷
